Our Story
Welcome to LA Legal Assistant, your reliable ally in providing legal document support to prevent evictions for families in disadvantaged communities. Our journey began during the challenging times of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. In those critical moments, LA Legal Assistant stood by tenants in their efforts to safeguard their homes and rights. We initiated our mission with a commitment to assist our community in navigating the intricate landscape of pandemic resources, including stimulus payments and financial aid.

As the pandemic persisted, we witnessed the hardships faced by low-income tenants who were at risk of eviction and unable to afford legal representation. In most instances, landlords had lawyers while tenants did not. Statistically, when a landlord is represented by an attorney and the tenant is not, the landlord prevails nearly 100% of the time.

Recognizing the pressing need, we felt compelled to broaden our mission. It's important to clarify that LA Legal Assistant and our representatives are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice. However, we empower tenants by assisting them in completing and submitting the necessary court forms. Ensuring that the right forms are filed in a timely manner gives tenants a stronger presence in the courtroom.

Since we started in 2020, we have helped South LA families and individuals:
-
Prepare and file court fee waivers, saving them thousands of dollars in court filing fees
-
Prepare and file Unlawful Detainers Answers, preventing them from losing their cases by default
-
Prepare and file Motions to Set Aside Default Judgments* when an answer was not filed, allowing them to have a voice in court (*prepared under attorney supervision)
-
Locate and apply for rental assistance programs, empowering them to pay rent & stay in their homes
-
Locate and apply for micro grants from community partners to assist with unforeseen emergencies
-
Participate with local attorneys and tenant right organizations to protect their housing rights

"Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care."
- Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Our Mission
At LA Legal Assistant, our mission is clear: to provide comprehensive legal document assistance to tenants facing eviction in under-served neighborhoods. We believe that access to affordable legal aid should not be a luxury, and no one should ever have to face homelessness due to a lack of resources, lack of knowledge of the court process or lack of support.

Our Vision
Our vision is one of empowerment, where tenants are equipped with the knowledge and resources to navigate the complexities of the eviction process confidently. We aspire to be a beacon of hope, ensuring that no one faces eviction or homelessness due to lack of access to legal assistance.
